2D animation
Traditional animation: This is the technique where animations hard draw frame by frame animations to simulate movement a good example of this in video games is Cuphead where all the animation frames were done by hand then scanned into the game and had colour added digitally. But in film and TV this is the most used type of animation until digital and 3D animation started taking over in the 90s.

FIG 1
Rotoscoping: This is the technique where animations trace over still frames from video to animate. The image above was done by this method.
Live-action animation: This is where you combined Live-action video with animation ether putting real actors in a cartoon animation or cartoon animations into Live-action video a good example of this was the 1990s film space jam.

FIG 2
Stop motion animation: This is the method of taking lots of photos of objects with them in different positions and poses to simulate motion two good examples of this is Wallis and Gromit and South Park who used to also use stop motion cut-out card

2D digital animation
Flash animation: this is a vector based animation package used for games ,TV and amateur online animations. One of the biggest pros of this is that you get very clean and high quality frames thanks to the vector images meaning you can scale the animation to any screen. The animation style itself is similar to traditional animation or stop-motion however you don’t need to draw or move each frame manually it will fill the cap so for example if you have a square on 1 side and set that as a key the move that square to the other side of the screen on say frame 20 and hit key then when you play it will move the object between the 2 keys in the remaining frames.
Digital variants of traditional: Still frame animation drawing frames of animation digitally In things like Photoshop in a similar way to traditional animation done on pen and paper. Also in a very similar way for 2d games people will draw each frame of animation for a object or character to visually simulate the movements so for example when the player starts moving a character to the right of the screen it will play a walking or running animation to go along with the movement.
